Fishing Reports

new boat sales Englewood Florida, Nauticstar boats, south bay pontoon

Another good month so far of fish-able weather. This allows us to run the distance to reach the marks of 45'-60'. Grouper have been the main target on the reefs and ledges out of Venice jetty. Pin fish is the bait of choice for these decent sized groupers. the best technique, is to use a knocker rig, which is setup like this:

If the Pin fish are not readily available, the second go-to would be a vertical jig. When we're fishing for bottom fish such as grouper and snapper using a technique known as vertical jigging or deep jigging, we find the addition of a scented plastic tail to the buck tail jig makes all the difference in the world.  Adding scent to the lure increases the bottom fish catch while vertical jigging. Here is a picture of a vertical jig:

There are plenty of snapper eating cut baits. Snappers up to 4lbs have been reported in our area. Great fish to target with the family and kids because they are easy to catch and taste GREAT! Moving on to the pelagic, Cobia are running close to the passes, the best bait to use is Pin fish, jigs, plugs, or the cream of the crop...Crabs!!!  Permit are still around but they are being finicky. The bait of choice is a fresh crab rigged like this:

*** Most bait shops this time of year will carry fresh crabs, they typically run around $30.00 a dozen ***

Spanish Mackerel and big King Mackerel are crashing the bait pods. If you are running out to your spot and see the birds going nuts over crashing water,  then you have found the mackerel!!! We have reports that they have been catching the kings over 30lbs!

Hope you have a Great month of fishing! Be sure to post your catch on the BIGTOY facebook page!!
